Mtskheta is the most sacred city for pilgrimage in Georgia.
Svetitskhoveli Cathedral is one of the main Orthodox Georgian churches. It was built in the XI century on the site of the first Christian Church of the Twelve Apostles in Georgia, built in the IV century.
The monastery Church of Jvari-immortalized in literature by Mikhail Lermontov (the poem “Mtsyri”) – is the oldest religious monument built at the dawn of Georgian Christianity in the VI century (585 – 604).
The Shio-Mgvime monastery was founded by the monk Shio, who was one of the thirteen Holy fathers who came to Georgia to preach Christianity. Before the construction of the temple, Saint Shio lived in a cave, hence the name of the monastery “shiomgvime”, which translates as “Shio cave”. The first Church of John the Baptist was built in the VI century and Shio himself chose the place for the construction of the temple. The monastery quickly became a center of religious activity.
