The Martkopi monastery is located in the ancient village of Martkopi at an altitude of 1350 m above sea level. This area until the VI century was called Akriani, “Stony places”. It was founded by one of the Syriac fathers, Saint Anthony of Martkopi, in the sixth century. The martkop monastery complex is a monument of historical and cultural significance. Mamkoda monastery date from the 19th century. According to the head of the monastery, father Gregory, in 1924, the Church of the assumption of the mother of God was blown up by Communists and it ceased to function. The restoration of the Church of our lady was completed in 2006 and services resumed after that. From the very beginning, there was a male monastery, and then a female monastery.
